Box Out Text

I have tried to use box out texts in order to break down the amount of writing on the page and to look like there is less to read. I have decided to do this because of my younger audience who are stereotypically less likely to enjoy reading and would probably use my magazine as a form of escapism (uses and gratifications theory) from their school work. By using box out text, information can be summarised, and differentiates the page from just a block of text. As well as this, if my audience does not have time to read the entire article, the box out text quickly provides them with information they were sourcing by reading my media product, again, following the uses and gratifications theory which believes audiences use media products to find information.

Here the first of two Box out Texts which I have used in my article. The box includes a simple question and answer format, and provides the reader with basic facts about the artist. Again, I have created “Cherish” as a typical pop artist and represented her as very down to earth, seen as she talks about Ben&Jerry’s ice cream and not being able to walk in high heels. The answers make the artist seem like she is not afraid to laugh at herself and are very relatable to my audience. Again, this compliments the uses and gratifications theory as my audience can use the box out text as personal identity as compare their selves to my artist.

My second box out text is a link to the backstage video of my artist on the magazine’s photo shoot and a question and answer from her fans afterwards. Not only does this use new media, which I know is very popular with my audience, but also provides an extra way for my audience to learn about “Cherish”, which compliments the information section of the uses and gratifications theory. The word “exclusive” has connotations of superiority, as the audience would believe they are watching a video which no one else could see except for those who had purchased the magazine. By following the uses and gratifications theory, I believe the video would appeal to my audience as they would watch the video to form personal relationships as they may be the only person in their friendship group to have seen the video and can therefore tell their friends about what “Cherish” has said.

Evaluation - Question 5

Evaluation - Question 3

Text version:

When choosing a publishing house for my magazine, it’s important that I choose one who does not already publish a magazine similar to mine. If the institution already publishes a pop magazine for young girls, aged 12-14, they would not be interested in my magazine because there would be no opportunity to reach a new market. As well as this, both magazines they own would be in competition with each other for the popularity from their shared audience. For example, I would not choose Egmont press to publish my magazine as they already publish the pop magazine “We Love Pop” who is aimed at a similar audience.
Also, it’s very important to me to choose a successful publishing house as they would provide larger financial agreements than a smaller institution would. This is because I need a larger budget to fund a big marketing campaign and to pay for big artists to feature in my magazine. I believe this is essential as I know the talent show “X Factor” created a pop magazine “X” which was similar to mine, was unsuccessful, so I need as much help as I can get to ensure this doesn’t happen to me.
I would consider using an independent publishing house, as it would be mean I would have more control over elements such as who I want to feature in my magazine. By using a larger company, they will always have the final say and therefore limits my originality. When researching into independent publishing houses, I discovered Pinterest, a fairly new instituion, formed in 2007. The institution focuses on online publications, however, which would mean my magazine would need to be published online as opposed to a print copy. Although this would save money and could be updated more frequently, I cannot do this as in my questionnaire none of my audience said they would prefer to read my magazine as an online copy.
I have decided that I would like IPC Media as my publishing house as it is well known and publishes over 350million copies every year of various magazines, such as “Look” and “Soap Life”. These magazines are all aimed towards female, mainstreamers, aged around 18 to 30 years old, and “Soap Life” can be reader by even older women such as 30+, which many of my readers may grow up to read. To market my magazine, I could use synergy and create a promotion in Soap life to offer a free copy of my magazine, which the women may obtain and give to their daughters. As well as this, I will spend a large part of my budget on my marketing campaign which will include launch parties at under 18 events, such as Oceana, and radio promotions.
