Box Out Text
I have tried to use box out texts in order to break down the
amount of writing on the page and to look like there is less to read. I have
decided to do this because of my younger audience who are stereotypically less
likely to enjoy reading and would probably use my magazine as a form of
escapism (uses and gratifications theory) from their school work. By using box
out text, information can be summarised, and differentiates the page from just
a block of text. As well as this, if my audience does not have time to read the
entire article, the box out text quickly provides them with information they
were sourcing by reading my media product, again, following the uses and
gratifications theory which believes audiences use media products to find
information.
Here the first of two Box out Texts which I have used in my
article. The box includes a simple question and answer format, and provides the
reader with basic facts about the artist. Again, I have created “Cherish” as a
typical pop artist and represented her as very down to earth, seen as she talks
about Ben&Jerry’s ice cream and not being able to walk in high heels. The
answers make the artist seem like she is not afraid to laugh at herself and are
very relatable to my audience. Again, this compliments the uses and
gratifications theory as my audience can use the box out text as personal
identity as compare their selves to my artist.
My second box out text is a link to the backstage video of
my artist on the magazine’s photo shoot and a question and answer from her fans
afterwards. Not only does this use new media, which I know is very popular with
my audience, but also provides an extra way for my audience to learn about
“Cherish”, which compliments the information section of the uses and
gratifications theory. The word “exclusive” has connotations of superiority, as
the audience would believe they are watching a video which no one else could
see except for those who had purchased the magazine. By following the uses and
gratifications theory, I believe the video would appeal to my audience as they
would watch the video to form personal relationships as they may be the only
person in their friendship group to have seen the video and can therefore tell
their friends about what “Cherish” has said.
